New data sharing deal between US and Europe starts today

The new Privacy Shield data sharing deal goes into effect from today, allowing the transfer of personal data between Europe and the US under new rules.

Tech companies will (mostly) welcome this news, but opponents to the agreement say that the provisions are too far-reaching, describing it as “a blank cheque for the transfer of personal data of EU citizens to the US.”

The previous Safe Harbor agreement was ruled invalid eight months ago.
