Google Duo: FaceTime without the platform politics

Google has finally released its multi-platform video calling service that rivals FaceTime on iOS and Android.

More:

Unlike FaceTime, however, Duo’s available for Android and iOS devices, making it more of a challenger to services like Skype (in some scenarios) or Facebook Messenger. There’s no group calling option though – it’s just one-on-one.

It’ll seamlessly (Google says) handle switching between WiFi and mobile networks mid-call, and all calls use end-to-end encryption by default.

Taking a multi-platform approach is a smart move – as is making it super-simple to sign up (you only need your phone number) – for a company that knows scale of services is where profitability lies.
