Watch: Skydiver jumps out of plane at 25,000 feet without a parachute

OK, so this one isn’t tech, but it is most definitely odd – and I could sit here and say how they clearly filmed it using GoPro cameras or how there was heart-rate tracking on the jumper Luke Aikins, but none of that really matters.

It’s bat-shit-don’t-try-this-at-home-even-if-you-have-a-plane-and-a-plan crazy.

Aikins jumps at around 7.5 kilometres – nearly 5 miles – up, accompanied by three buddies to help him keep on track. They then deploy their chutes (because they’re likely not nuts) and Aikins carries on to land in a butterfly net. OK, it’s not a butterfly net, it’s much, much larger but if you’re jumping from 25,000 feet without a parachute and that’s your target, it probably feels like a butterfly net.

The feat makes Aikins the first person to deliberately jump out of a plane at that height without a parachute and land successfully.
