This windowless Manhatten skyscraper is an anomaly in this list for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s not decrepit. And secondly, few people know for sure exactly what the building at 33 Thomas Street in New York is really for. A recent, and great, investigative report done by The Intercept concluded that its current use is as a listening post for the National Security Agency that’s hidden in plain sight. Creepy, but in a different way. It’s not even illuminated at night.

Built over the course of five years, and completed in 1974, the building was built to withstand an atomic blast and serve as a nerve centre for communications. According to The Intercept’s investigation, in conjunction with information leaked by Edward Snowden, the 32 storey (three of those are below ground) building was codenamed Titanpointe by the NSA.
